Basic air ventilation typically requires up to 6 air changes per hour (ACH) to provide fresh air, manage humidity, and reduce odors and CO2 levels. However, each air change only lowers pathogen levels by about 63%. Simply opening a window, which provides 1-2 ACH, won’t effectively eliminate pathogens and may impact comfort. Increasing ventilation to 15-20 ACH is a well-regarded approach to reduce pathogens and lower health risks.
